The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has awarded Airbus the certification of the A350-900 equipped with the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 Enhanced Performance (EP) engine.

This is an evolution of the turbofan used by the widebody and is capable of delivering one percent lower fuel consumption, in addition to lower pollutant emissions.

Although the number may seem insignificant, in air travel even small reductions have a significant impact on operating costs.

According to the manufacturer, the Trent XWB-84 EP incorporates design improvements, including upgraded fan, compressor and turbine aerodynamics and enhanced turbine blade cooling.

Following EASA, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to grant the corresponding certification, which will enable deliveries to more customers around the world.

“With EASA’s certification of the Trent XWB-84 EP to power the A350-900, we strengthen the aircraft’s position as the long-range leader,” said Julien Puyou, Airbus’ Head of Widebody Programme.

By the end of March 2025, the A350 Family had accumulated more than 1,380 firm orders from 60 customers worldwide, including the A350-900, A350-1000 and A350F freighter variants.
