Grupo Abra and SKY Airline announced on Monday, November 10, a principle agreement for the Chilean airline to integrate into the conglomerate. The transaction is subject to approval by competition authorities in the countries involved.

The objective of the agreement is to expand connectivity between Latin American countries, leveraging SKY’s presence in the markets it already operates. According to the companies, the integration will allow for a greater offering of routes and opportunities for passengers in the region.

“SKY is a company with which we share the same purpose: access to air transport as a priority. At Abra, we want more people in Latin America to be able to fly and do so reliably, with the best network of connections, friendly service, and a competitive offer,” said Grupo Abra CEO Adrian Neuhauser.

“This is great news for our company and for our passengers. Once the preliminary agreement presented today to the respective competition defense authorities is approved, SKY will become part of a group that currently operates a combined fleet of over 300 aircraft and connects more than 140 destinations in over 25 countries,” said Holger Paulmann, president of SKY Airline.

Grupo Abra controls the operations of Avianca and GOL airlines, as well as a strategic investment in Wamos Air. The conglomerate transports over 70 million passengers a year, has about 30,000 employees, and covers more than 25 countries.

SKY was founded in 2011 and is one of the first low-cost airlines in South America. Its fleet consists of 36 Airbus jets, including 29 A320neo and seven A321neo.

During the regulatory approval process, the companies will maintain independent operations and there will be no changes in relationships with users, suppliers, and employees. SKY Airline will continue to operate under its own brand and culture, with Holger Paulmann remaining as chairman of the board after the transaction is completed.
