ATR has announced a significant order from Air Algérie for 16 new ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft. The agreement also includes the delivery of an ATR 72-600 full-flight simulator, the first of its kind in Africa, aimed at enhancing aviation training capabilities in the region.

The deliveries of the new aircraft are scheduled between 2026 and 2028. The 72-seat ATR 72-600s, powered by PW127XT engines, will be operated by Domestic Airlines, a new regional subsidiary of Air Algérie.

The airline plans to strengthen connectivity across the country, particularly in Algeria’s southern regions where air travel plays a key role in economic and social development.

Air Algérie has been operating ATR aircraft since 2003 and remains the manufacturer’s largest customer in Africa, with a current fleet of 12 ATR 72-500s and 3 ATR 72-600s. The new order reflects the airline’s ongoing commitment to improving domestic air transport while gradually reducing its carbon footprint.

“The ATR 72-600 is the right aircraft to help us connect all regions of our country and support national development through reliable and efficient air transport. Its performance on short and thin routes makes it an essential part of our strategy while its fuel efficiency also supports our goal of reducing emissions and building more sustainable operations. By investing in this new fleet and the first ATR 72-600 simulator in Africa, we are also reinforcing our commitment to regional connectivity, operational excellence, and the future of regional aviation in Algeria,” said Hamza Benhamouda, Air Algérie CEO.

The deal marks the largest single order from an African airline in ATR’s history, reinforcing the long-standing partnership between the manufacturer and Air Algérie and highlighting their joint role in advancing regional aviation across the continent.
