Air Busan Airbus A321 catches fire in South Korea
An Air Busan Airbus A321 was partially destroyed by a fire at Gimhae International Airport in South Korea on Tuesday.
The aircraft had landed in Busan on flight BX8118 from Jeju Island while being prepared to travel to Hong Kong.
According to reports, the fire started inside the A321 and spread to the top of the fuselage. Fire crews from the airport were called and managed to control the fire.
There were 176 people on board, including 169 passengers and seven crew members. All were able to evacuate safely, with only one person suffering minor injuries and being taken to hospital.
The A321 had been in service for 17 years, initially by Asiana Airlines, which leased it from AerCap. Since 2017, it has been flying with Air Busan, its low-cost arm.
In December, Asiana and Air Busan were taken over by Korean Air, the country’s largest carrier, after a long negotiation process.
Accident on December 29
The incident with the A321 comes almost a month after the most serious air accident in South Korea’s history.
On December 29, a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 was destroyed after overstepping the runway at Muan Airport. Of the 181 occupants, only two survived in serious condition.
