Air TransportAir Montenegro, the national flag carrier of the Balkan nation, is exploring a major fleet renewal plan that could see the airline adopt next-generation Embraer E2 jets by 2027. The move would replace its current fleet of aging Embraer E195 aircraft, which have been in service for 16 to 17 years.
Although the airline is relatively young—having launched operations just over four years ago—its fleet is already showing signs of wear. The three E195 jets, which operate mostly short-haul, high-frequency routes, experience accelerated aging due to intense daily use.
According to a senior executive cited by Zama Aero, Air Montenegro is evaluating the Embraer E190-E2 and E195-E2 as front-runners in the fleet upgrade.
The Airbus A220 is also under consideration, but the Brazilian-made jets hold an advantage thanks to Air Montenegro’s existing experience with Embraer aircraft. This familiarity would simplify pilot training, maintenance, and operational logistics, making the transition smoother and more cost-effective.

The fleet renewal plan outlines the acquisition of five aircraft, to be introduced in two phases: three jets initially, followed by two more. Deliveries would begin around 2027, aligning with expected improvements in availability and reliability of Pratt & Whitney's GTF engines, which currently power both the A220 and the E2 series.
While direct purchase is the preferred route, leasing remains on the table if financing proves challenging. The E195-E2, in particular, offers a compelling case for efficiency: it seats 18–20 more passengers than the first-generation E195 and delivers significantly lower fuel consumption and operating costs per seat, while also offering extended range.
If confirmed, the fleet expansion would position Air Montenegro for sustainable growth, improved network reach, and enhanced passenger experience across Europe and neighboring regions.
