Air Niugini has taken delivery of its first Airbus A220-300 on September 11, beginning a new phase in the carrier’s fleet modernization efforts. The aircraft was leased from Azorra and is the first of the type to join the airline’s operations.

The A220-300, named ‘People’s Balus’ to mark the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence, has a 138-seat single-class configuration. Air Niugini becomes the 25th operator of the A220, joining a growing list of airlines integrating the model into their fleets.

Airbus and Air Niugini signed a firm order for six A220-100s in 2023 but in May the carrier expanded the deal with two more aircraft. Besides that, the company leases three A220-300s, with greater seating capacity.

Fleet renewal has been a focus for the airline, which currently operates aging aircraft, including Fokker 100 jets that have been in service for more than 30 years. The arrival of the A220-300 follows an extensive evaluation process, during which Air Niugini also considered the Embraer E2 family before selecting the Airbus model.

The A220-300 offers a range of up to 6,700 km and is recognized for its fuel efficiency compared to other aircraft in its category. Airbus has reported over 940 orders for the A220 from more than 30 customers as of August 2025, with more than 440 units delivered and active on over 1,800 routes to more than 480 destinations.

The introduction of the A220-300 is expected to enhance Air Niugini’s operational capability and network flexibility as the airline advances its fleet renewal program.
