Airlink’s new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft entered commercial service on December 22, operating its first flight from O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to King Shaka International Airport in Durban.

The airline is the first in Southern Africa to operate the E195-E2, deploying the jets on high-density routes such as Johannesburg–Durban, Cape Town–Hoedspruit, Gqeberha–Johannesburg, and Cape Town–Mbombela.

The E195-E2 is configured with 136 seats in a two-by-two all-economy layout. “The E195-E2s’ entry into Airlink service is set to deliver significant competitive advantages alongside commercial, economic and operational efficiencies,” said Mr de Villiers Engelbrecht, CEO of Airlink.

The new aircraft are powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1009G geared turbofan engines and entered service following safety oversight and certification by the South African Civil Aviation Authority. Airlink is leasing ten E195-E2s from Azorra and has already received three of them.

“I have no doubt our customers will appreciate the comfort of the E195-E2’s cabin which is without a doubt the best in class,” said Engelbrecht.

Airlink currently has an exclusive fleet of first-generation Embraer jets. There are 70 aircraft divided between 29 E190s, six E195s, four E175s, three E170s, eleven ERJ140s and 17 ERJ145s.

The E195-E2 is already operating on the African continent with Air Peace, which has five aircraft in its fleet, the first of an order for 13 jets delivered in 2021.
