Air TransportAmerican Airlines has scheduled the inaugural commercial flight of its Airbus A321XLR for December 18, operating between New York John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX). The aircraft is now available for booking on this route, with service extending through February 11, 2026.
The first of three aircraft, tail number N303NY, landed in Dallas, Fort Worth, on Wednesday after a flight of more than 10 hours from Hamburg, Germany.
The introduction of the A321XLR on the JFK-LAX corridor will replace the current A321, altering the carrier’s premium transcontinental offering. The aircraft will feature 155 seats in a three-class layout: 20 in business, 12 in premium economy, and 123 in economy, with the business cabin arranged 1-1.
The A321XLR was ordered by American Airlines in 2019 with an initial target entry into service in 2023. Delays have pushed first passenger operations to late 2025, aligning with broader industry challenges related to certification and supply chain constraints.

The cabin product on the A321XLR differs from American’s widebody fleet, particularly in business class. With the shift to the new configuration, American will reduce first-class capacity by 10 seats but add 12 premium economy and 51 economy seats compared to the outgoing A321.
American Airlines has published seat maps for the A321XLR, designated as ’32Q’, and is planning between one and two daily flights on the JFK-LAX route during the initial period. Flight numbers will vary based on daily schedules.
The airline intends to begin transatlantic operations with the A321XLR in March 2026, following domestic deployment. Future network details and additional international routes are expected to be announced as deliveries progress.
