Air TransportAmerican Airlines and Porter Airlines have established a codeshare partnership that enables travelers to book connecting flights between the United States and Canada through the airlines’ digital channels.
The agreement, effective immediately, introduces reciprocal booking options and mileage accrual for members of American’s AAdvantage program.
Under the codeshare, American Airlines will place its code on select Porter flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport, facilitating access to Canadian destinations such as Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa, and Victoria. Additional Canadian cities, including Calgary and Charlottetown, are expected to be added soon.

Porter will also apply its code to select American Airlines flights, notably transborder and domestic routes connecting from hubs in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth, and Philadelphia.

American Airlines and Porter Airlines filed a joint application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) on July 25, seeking approval for a reciprocal codeshare agreement.
For American Airlines, the partnership fills a long-standing gap in its Canadian network. While competitors like United and Delta already benefit from partnerships with Air Canada and WestJet, respectively, American lacked a strong Canadian regional partner.
The initial phase grants travelers the ability to book codeshare itineraries to several US cities, with Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, and Philadelphia available immediately. Further US destinations, such as Honolulu, Nashville, New Orleans, and Portland, are scheduled to join the network in subsequent rollout phases. Porter customers will also gain access to American’s broader network, extending to the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

Porter Airlines operates a fleet predominantly composed of Embraer E195-E2 jets, introduced as part of its recent expansion to serve longer routes from Toronto Pearson. American Airlines, with a diverse fleet including Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737 series aircraft, currently operates more flights to Toronto than any other US carrier. The codeshare partnership leverages the connectivity of both airlines’ networks, facilitating more flexible routing options for passengers.
Future stages of the partnership are expected to introduce integrated loyalty benefits and additional reciprocal booking features.
