American Airlines Boeing 737-800 catches fire on right engine after landing in Denver

An American Airlines Boeing 737-800 caught fire on its right engine after diverting to Denver International Airport on Thursday.

The jet carrying 178 passengers was on flight 1006 from Colorado Springs to Dallas, but shortly after takeoff, the pilots noticed engine vibrations.

The plane landed at 5:15 p.m. without incident, but as it approached the gate, the right engine caught fire and the passengers were evacuated.

Videos show several people on the left wing of the aircraft, registration N885NN. Twelve of them were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.


According to the FAA, the pilots reported engine vibrations shortly after takeoff.

The Boeing 737-800 is powered by CFM56 engines, one of the most produced turbofans in history.

Aircraft N885NN was delivered by Boeing to American Airlines in February 2012 under lease from AerCap.
