American Airlines’ first Airbus A321XLR, registered N303NY, was en route to Dallas after departing Hamburg, Germany, on Wednesday, following several months in storage. The aircraft is expected to enter service by early 2026 after previously being stored in the Czech Republic due to seating supply delays.

American Airlines ordered 50 A321XLRs and has taken delivery of three so far. The first unit was officially handed over in July 2025, but seating supply chain issues delayed its transfer to the United States.

The A321XLR features a 155-seat layout, including 20 business class seats in a 1-1 herringbone configuration, 12 premium economy seats in 2-2, and 123 economy seats. This cabin arrangement differs from American’s widebody aircraft and may limit the number of Main Cabin Extra seats available.

Interior supply constraints, not certification delays, caused the aircraft to be stored. The aircraft remained in storage until seat installation was completed, a challenge which also affected planning for initial route deployment.

American plans to use the A321XLR initially on premium transcontinental routes, later expanding to long-haul international services, particularly from New York and Philadelphia to Europe. Entry into service is targeted for early 2026, though further schedule adjustments remain possible as additional units are delivered.
