American Airlines operated the inaugural flight of its new Airbus A321XLR on December 18, departing from New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 11:00 ET.

The flight carried more than 150 passengers and is the first commercial operation of the type by a US airline.

American Airlines is the launch operator of the A321XLR in the US market. This variant is capable of long-haul flights, and the transcontinental flight represents a great opportunity for the use of the aircraft. The two cities are approximately 2,146 nm (3,974 km) apart.

Passengers on the inaugural flight received commemorative gift kits, including a specially designed flight tag, to mark the aircraft’s first transcontinental service.

Heather Garboden, Chief Customer Officer at American Airlines, stated, “We’re excited that you’re here today to celebrate the debut of this new aircraft to our fleet.”

The A321XLR is configured with 20 ‘Flagship Suite’ business class seats, 12 premium economy seats, and 123 Main Cabin seats. American plans to deploy the aircraft on routes such as JFK-Edinburgh, JFK-San Francisco, and Boston-LAX starting in the spring. The first international service is scheduled for March 8, 2026, between JFK and Edinburgh.

American took delivery of its first A321XLR on October 22. The airline intends to use the aircraft’s extended range and cabin flexibility to expand both domestic and international offerings.

Airbus introduced the A321XLR at the 2019 Paris Air Show, securing over 200 orders within three days. The model is recognized for its extended range among single-aisle aircraft, with an autonomy up to 4,700 nm (8,700 km).
