A Russian Antonov An-22 military transport aircraft crashed with seven people onboard in the Ivanovo region, approximately 250 km northeast of Moscow, on December 9.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the incident occurred during a test flight following maintenance. The aircraft came down in an uninhabited area.

“Today in the Ivanovo region, during a test flight following repairs, an An-22 military transport aircraft crashed,” said the defence ministry a statement.

Russian media reported that there were no survivors among the five crew members and two passengers. The aircraft’s registration and the circumstances of the accident are still unknown.

Rescue teams were dispatched to the crash site shortly after the incident was reported. A commission from the Russian Aerospace Forces has been sent to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Antonov An-22, originally developed in the Soviet Union by the Antonov Design Bureau, remains one of the largest turboprop-powered transport aircraft in service. It is primarily used for heavy cargo and military logistics.
