An Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer E190 jet crashed after attempting an emergency landing near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan.

Video footage shows the aircraft making a right turn and rapidly losing altitude before crashing into the ground, breaking apart and catching fire.

According to the Ministry of Transport, there were 62 passengers and five crew members on board. The plane was on flight J28243 between Baku and Grozny on December 25.

Despite the violent crash, videos showed people being rescued from the aircraft with apparent minor injuries. According to authorities, at least 30 people survived the crash.

AZAL's E190 had the registration 4K-AZ65 and was delivered by Embraer to the airline in July 2013. The aircraft could carry up to 106 passengers.

Tracking data from FlightRadar24 shows that the aircraft was flying at 30,000 feet 36 minutes after taking off from Baku and then began to lose altitude rapidly.

For more than an hour, the pilots tried to keep the jet aloft, with large swings in altitude as it flew over the Caspian Sea until it arrived near Aktau.

A longer version of the video above reveals that the Azerbaijan plane made several climbs, apparently losing speed, and then diving and accelerating.
