DefenseThe Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Italy’s Leonardo on December 9 in Dhaka for the potential acquisition of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft.
This step is part of Bangladesh’s broader effort to modernize its air combat capabilities through the introduction of multi-role platforms to replace old fighter jets.
The LOI outlines plans for eventual delivery of Eurofighter Typhoons, which are expected to join the BAF’s combat fleet as part of its next-generation force structure.
In April, the Bangladeshi government established an interministerial committee tasked with negotiating the purchase of 20 Chinese J-10 fighters in a deal valued at $2.2 billion.

The BAF currently operates a fleet of 212 aircraft, including 44 fighters, as it seeks to diversify sources and technologies in its combat aviation inventory.
“The Letter of Intent represents a significant step in the modernization process,” said Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, Chief of Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force.
A potential sale agreement for the Eurofighter to an Asian country would be an unexpected boost for the European fighter jet program, which until recently had its future threatened by a lack of funding and orders.
