Boeing awarded contract to supply 17 P-8A Poseidon to Canada and Germany
The US Navy has awarded Boeing a $3.4 billion contract to supply 17 P-8A Poseidon aircraft to the Royal Canadian Air Force and German Navy.
Canada will receive 14 maritime patrol jets that will replace the current fleet of CP-140 Aurora turboprops, the local name for the P-3 Orion. The first P-8As will be delivered from 2026.
Germany, in turn, will have three additional P-8s to the five planes acquired in June 2021. The aircraft will be operated by the German Navy from 2025 and will take the place of the country's P-3 Orions.
“We are proud to add Canada to the list of international P-8 partners as well as to Germany’s fleet of maritime patrol aircraft,” said Philip June, vice president and program manager, P-8A program. “The Poseidon is a proven aircraft, with more than 600,000 flight hours, that will serve Canada and Germany well in today’s challenging security environment and for decades to come.”
According to Boeing, there are 200 P-8s currently in service or under contract in nine countries, including the United States, Australia, India, the United Kingdom, Norway, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Germany and Canada.
