Cathay Pacific CEO Ronald Lam stated that the airline is in talks regarding a significant new aircraft order to support fleet expansion beyond 2030. The announcement was made during the Routes World 2025 conference in Hong Kong on September 25, with details reported by Bloomberg.

The carrier is currently holding discussions with its main shareholders, Swire Pacific Ltd and Air China Ltd, who jointly control about 75% of the airline, on the scope and timing of the new order.

Lam emphasized that while the initial five years of the airline’s current 10-year fleet renewal plan are set, decisions for the period from 2030 to 2035 remain under review.

Recent fleet developments include an order in August 2024 for 30 Airbus A330neo aircraft, which have yet to be delivered, as well as the induction of new Airbus A320neo family jets following a purchase of 32 units in September 2023.

In August 2025, Cathay Pacific also exercised options for an additional 14 Boeing 777-9, increasing its total order for the type to 35 aircraft, with first deliveries expected from 2027.

The airline’s current requirements include more single-aisle jets, regional widebodies, and additional freighters to address anticipated growth in both passenger and cargo segments. Cathay Pacific Group, which includes low-cost subsidiary HK Express, operates a fleet of around 230 aircraft and holds firm commitments and options for about 150 more units.

The group’s long-haul fleet is composed of Airbus A350s and, with the newly ordered 777-9s, marks the company’s first purchase of Boeing widebody aircraft in over a decade.
