China Eastern Airlines (CEA) debuted its fifth domestic route on Monday with its new commercial jet, the COMAC C919. The flight is between Beijing and X’ian, the capital of Shaanxi Province.

It is also the second flight operated from Beijing by the domestically developed aircraft. Until now, CEA has been operating the C919 on flights from Shanghai, close to COMAC headquarters, where the aircraft is manufactured.

The new aircraft configured with 164 seats has taken over flights MU2113 and MU2120. The first departs from Xiangyang International Airport at 4:00 p.m. and lands in Beijing at 5:40 p.m., while the return flight is scheduled to land at 8:00 p.m. The C919 replaces the Airbus A320 family on the route, but only on one of several daily frequencies.

The debut was made possible by the arrival of the seventh C919 delivered by COMAC last week.

China Eastern Airlines is currently the only operator of the aircraft, but Air China and China Southern Airlines are expected to join them soon.

The three main Chinese carriers have more than 300 firm orders for the C919.
