DefenseRecent photographs have surfaced showing the J-XDS, also referred to as the J-50, China’s sixth-generation stealth fighter, during ground taxi tests at Shenyang Aircraft Corporation’s aerodrome. The images offer the most detailed look yet at the jet, highlighting its advanced design features and fueling discussion about its development.
The photos reveal a tailless airframe with a single-seat cockpit, twin engines equipped with 2D thrust vectoring, and a pronounced electro-optical targeting system mounted below the nose. The aircraft’s lambda-shaped wing and lack of tail surfaces are notable for their aerodynamic efficiency and reduced radar cross-section.
Despite the proximity, the images shared on social media are of low quality, so we generated an AI-powered version to create a more accurate version.

Additional technical observations include movable wingtips that serve as control surfaces, a tricycle landing gear configuration, and supersized engine inlets with diverterless supersonic intakes (DSI) designed to enhance both maneuverability and stealth characteristics.
There are also indications of ventral and lateral weapon bays, although these features have not been officially confirmed.
While the specific mission profile of the J-XDS remains undisclosed, the current airframe is assumed to focus on air-to-air operations. The increased frequency of sightings of advanced Chinese military aircraft, including flights over densely populated areas, suggests a shift toward greater transparency from Beijing regarding its defense technology programs.

This openness contrasts with the United States’ approach, where demonstrators and prototypes are rarely exposed to public view. The growing visibility of Chinese military platforms points to evolving strategies in messaging and may impact global perceptions of capability development.
China’s new 6th-generation aircraft began appearing on Chinese social media in late December. So far, three models have been spotted. In addition to the JXDS, there’s the three-engine ‘J-36’ jet and another stealth fighter, with no further details yet.
