China is stepping up its efforts to promote the J-10CE “Vigorous Dragon” fighter in the international market, with a particular focus on the Southeast Asian region.
While there is no official confirmation of a formal proposal to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), recent demonstrations and diplomatic actions point to Chinese interest in offering the jet to the country in the future.
The J-10CE is the export version of the J-10C fighter, a 4.5th generation multi-role combat aircraft with performance comparable to fighters such as the F-16V and Gripen E. The Chinese model is manufactured by Chengdu and equipped with AESA radar, PL-15 long-range air-to-air missiles, and advanced electronic warfare systems.

Its cost-benefit ratio is one of its main attractions: with a lower price than its Western competitors, the J-10CE has already been acquired by Pakistan, where it officially began operating in 2022.
A few weeks ago, the fighter became famous for having shot down an Indian Air Force Rafale during the crisis between the two countries.
The RMAF is looking for new fighters and signed a contract in 2022 with South Korea’s KAI for the acquisition of up to 36 FA-50 light fighters, with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2027.

Despite this, the RMAF continues to analyze options to replace its retired MiG-29 fighters and modernize its Sukhoi Su-30MKM fleet. In this context, the J-10CE could emerge as an alternative for future phases of the re-equipment program.
The “Vigorous Dragon” has also reportedly been offered to Colombia, which has selected the Swedish Gripen fighter but has not yet signed a contract with Saab.
