China unveils upgraded J-20A and twin-seat J-20S stealth fighters on 15th anniversary of first flight

Official media highlights airframe, avionics and propulsion changes as the J-20 family continues to evolve

Chinese official media have disclosed new details on upgraded variants of the J-20 stealth fighter, designated J-20A and J-20S, marking 15 years since the aircraft’s maiden flight in January 2011. The disclosures indicate that development of the J-20 has shifted toward incremental airframe, systems and propulsion upgrades rather than external redesign.

The J-20A is described as an improved single-seat variant of the original J-20. According to information released by state outlets, the aircraft features a modified upper fuselage section behind the cockpit, with a raised area where the canopy meets the fuselage.

The change is intended to improve airflow characteristics at supersonic speeds and reduce drag, while also creating internal volume for additional equipment, systems or fuel.

Chinese sources say the revised configuration suggests broader internal upgrades, including updated avionics and sensors that reduce reliance on direct pilot visibility. The additional systems and potential weight increase are expected to be offset by more powerful engines, pointing to parallel progress in propulsion as part of the J-20A standard.

The J-20A and J-20S both made their first public appearances during China’s military parade in September 2025, although no technical details were released at the time. The latest disclosures confirm that the “A” designation reflects a comprehensive upgrade package rather than a minor modification.

Twin-seat

Alongside the J-20A, China also highlighted the J-20S, a twin-seat stealth fighter described as the first of its kind globally. The second crew member is intended to support complex mission management, including command-and-control functions and coordination with unmanned systems.

Chinese media describe the J-20S as optimized for long-range air superiority, strike missions and manned-unmanned teaming, with the rear seat focused on sensor management, electronic warfare and control of cooperating platforms.

The two-seat J-20 fighter

The J-20 is China’s first operational stealth fighter and its entry point into fifth-generation combat aircraft. The fleet is estimated to exceed 300 aircraft in service with the People’s Liberation Army Air Force, following a sustained increase in production.

The aircraft continues to receive upgrades as China develops sixth-generation fighter programs commonly referred to as J-36 and J-50, whose prototypes have been observed in flight testing since late 2024.
