Conviasa resumes flights between Venezuela and Brazil
Conviasa, Venezuela's state-owned airline, has resumed the connection between the country and Brazil, suspended since March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since April 13, the Venezuelan flag carrier has operated a weekly flight between Puerto Ordaz and Manaus, in Amazon region. The route is served by an Embraer E190 configured with 104 seats.
“Our main airline, Conviasa, started operating between Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, and Manaus, Brazil, with a weekly flight. To facilitate tourist and commercial exchange between the two countries,” said Ramon Celestino Velázquez Araguayan, president of Conviasa.
Although neighbors, Brazil and Venezuela do not have air connections between their major cities. Until 2016, airlines such as Gol flew to Caracas, however, the Nicolás Maduro regime decided to withhold funds raised in the country, which led to the suspension of flights.
The return of Conviasa flights coincides with the rise to power of left-wing president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who defeated right-wing Jair Bolsonaro in elections held in 2022.
Lula da Silva maintained a closer relationship with Maduro's predecessor, Hugo Chavez, who died in 2013.
