EgyptAir has expanded its original order of ten A350-900s to 16 aircraft, said Airbus on Wednesday.

According to the manufacturer, the additional order is part of the flag carrier’s expansion strategy to meet the growing demand for air travel.

EgyptAir had announced an order for ten A350s in November 2023, which will become the largest aircraft in the fleet, replacing the five Boeing 777-300ERs currently in service.

“Today’s announcement reflects our commitment to integrating the next-generation aircraft into our fleet. It will enable us to meet rising demand for long-haul travel, support our network expansion plans over the next five years, and contribute to Egypt’s broader efforts to promote more sustainable air transport,” said the airline’s CEO, Ahmed Adel.

“This is the second time EgyptAir has placed an order for the A350 and the decision is testament to the value the aircraft provides,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business.

A timeline for first deliveries was not provided by the companies. EgyptAir has a fleet of 70 aircraft consisting of Boeing 737 and A320 family single-aisle jets and wide-bodies A330, 777 and 787 Dreamliner.

The airline was also an operator of the A220, but passed on the 12 aircraft received to Azorra after being frustrated by aircraft availability issues.
