DefenseEmbraer delivered the first five A-29N Super Tucano aircraft to the Portuguese Air Force on December 1 in Alverca.
The delivery makes Portugal the first country to operate the new A-29N variant, which meets NATO operational requirements, and comes a year after the contract was signed.
A Letter of Intent was signed for the potential establishment of a final assembly line for the A-29N in Portugal. The A-29N is equipped for advanced pilot training, close air support, and aerial patrol missions.

“The delivery of these aircraft represents another decisive step in the modernization of the Air Force,” said General João Cartaxo Alves, Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Air Force.
“The delivery of the first A-29N Super Tucanos strengthens the strategic partnership between the Portuguese State and Embraer,” stated Bosco da Costa Junior, president and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security.
“We are not only introducing a new air attack capability but also addressing new scenarios,” said Nuno Melo, Portugal’s Defense Minister.
The first three A-29N aircraft arrived at OGMA facilities in Portugal on August 25. The delivery occurred eight months after contract signature, with the aircraft intended to operate within NATO’s framework.

On November 9, two additional A-29N Super Tucano turboprops arrived in Alverca, Portugal, after a ferry flight from Brazil.
The delivery to Portugal is part of a series of agreements that Embraer has closed for the advanced training and light attack aircraft in recent years. The manufacturer has also signed contracts with Paraguay, Uruguay, Panama, the Philippines, and an undisclosed African country.
For the Portuguese Air Force, the A-29N is the second Embraer model to be integrated into its fleet recently. The first was the KC-390 Millennium cargo plane, for which there are six firm orders and more purchase options.
