DefenseEmbraer announced on Tuesday an expansion of the A-29 Super Tucano turboprop’s mission capabilities, introducing new features to support combat operations against Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). The aircraft now integrates additional sensors and enhanced system connectivity tailored for this role.
The update responds to a growing global demand for counter-UAS solutions, underscored by recent conflicts that have exposed vulnerabilities to drone warfare.
“We continue to expand the A-29’s capabilities to address the most recent challenges faced by many nations worldwide,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security
Designed for operations in austere environments and rugged terrain, the A-29 Super Tucano has proven effective in light attack, reconnaissance, and advanced training missions. The new upgrade aims to ensure the platform remains relevant amid rapidly evolving operational scenarios.

Embraer’s focus on counter-UAS capabilities reflects broader trends in the defense sector, which increasingly prioritizes flexible and multi-role platforms adaptable to modern threats.
The A-29 is currently operated by 22 air forces worldwide and has accumulated more than 600,000 flight hours, cementing its reputation as a reliable and combat-proven aircraft.
Portugal is among the most recent customers, with five A-29N aircraft—configured to NATO standards—already in the country and scheduled for delivery later this year.
