Ethiopian Airlines announced a new order for 11 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft on November 17 during the Dubai Airshow.

The agreement will enable the airline to expand both regional and international routes, while reinforcing its Addis Ababa hub.

The airline's 737 MAX fleet comprises 22 aircraft, in addition to operating 11 737-800s and two older 737-700s.

“We are excited to announce our agreement with Boeing for 11 additional 737-8s today during the Dubai Airshow,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew.

Boeing highlighted the significance of the deal, with Brad McMullen, senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, stating, “Ethiopian Airlines’ commitment to expanding its 737 MAX fleet underscores its leadership in Africa. Our new partnership also strengthens our nearly 80-year relationship with the airline and the region.”

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates the largest fleet of Boeing aircraft in Africa and holds the continent’s largest backlog for the 737 MAX, 777X, and 787 Dreamliner models.

The Ethiopian airline also flies Airbus A350 jets, of which it has 22 A350-900s and four A350-1000s. In addition, there are 29 Dash 8-400 turboprops in service.
