Ethiopian Airlines has placed an order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, according to an announcement made jointly with Boeing.

The order covers nine 787-9 jets and was finalised in December 2025. Ethiopian Airlines also completed the purchase of 11 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft during the same period, increasing its order book by a total of 20 aircraft.

The new widebody jets will be used on long-haul routes from Addis Ababa. Ethiopian currently serves 145 international destinations and operates the largest fleet of 787 Dreamliners in Africa, including both 787-8 and 787-9 variants.

“We are pleased to confirm the order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to further expand our existing fleet,” said Mesfin Tasew, chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines Group. He added that the airline continues to prioritise fleet renewal with newer aircraft types.

Boeing said the order reinforces Ethiopian Airlines’ position as its largest customer in Africa. The manufacturer noted that the 787-9 is used by the carrier on intercontinental services linking Africa with Europe, Asia and North America, as well as on selected intra-African routes.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates the largest Boeing fleet on the continent and also holds outstanding orders for 737 MAX, 777X and 787 aircraft.
