Air TransportEVIO Inc. has formally launched its EVIO 810 hybrid-electric regional aircraft program, announcing 450 conditional pre-orders and a planned entry into service in the early 2030s. The company, which operates in Canada and the United States, introduced the initiative with commitments from two major airlines, whose names were not revealed.
The 810 is designed for the 50-100 seat segment, a category that has seen limited new product development in recent years. EVIO aims to address operator needs for efficiency and lower emissions amid evolving regulatory and market pressures.
Boeing has provided both investment and technical support to the EVIO program, while Pratt & Whitney Canada is collaborating on propulsion technology. “This collaboration is a unique opportunity to advance the potential of hybrid-electric aircraft architectures,” said Scott McElvaine, vice president of Sales and Marketing at Pratt & Whitney Canada.
The EVIO 810 will employ a hybrid-electric propulsion system targeted at reducing both fuel consumption and direct operating costs. The company anticipates an operating range and performance profile suited to high-frequency regional routes.

In addition to the baseline passenger variant, EVIO foresees the development of military derivatives, including airborne early warning (AEW), reconnaissance, and even fully autonomous versions for specialized missions.
The company has secured conditional purchase agreements for 250 aircraft, with options for an additional 200 units. These early commitments come from two undisclosed major airlines seeking to modernize their regional fleets.
EVIO projects total demand exceeding 7,500 units in the regional aircraft segment over the next two decades. The sector continues to experience accelerated fleet renewal, with approximately 2,650 regional aircraft retired in the last five years due to rising operational and maintenance costs.
Founded in 2019, EVIO has established engineering and program offices in both Canada and the United States. “From day one, our focus has been to increase profitability for regional operators and deliver an exceptional passenger experience,” said Michael Derman, CEO of EVIO.
Industry stakeholders note that the EVIO 810’s introduction coincides with renewed interest in regional connectivity and the search for lower-carbon solutions. “The development of EVIO’s new hybrid-electric aircraft and partnership with Canadian industry is an example of promising innovation in the country’s aerospace sector,” said Al Meinzinger, president of Boeing Canada.
