FedEx removes 22 of its Boeing 757-200s from service
FedEx has decided to permanently retire 22 Boeing 757-200 freighter jets due to slower order demand, the company revealed in an earnings report released on Tuesday.
The aircraft are old and some of them were already deactivated. FedEx has a fleet of 118 Boeing 757s of which 41 are parked.
The average age of these jets is high, with almost 33 years in service. FedEx will also retire 18 MD-11F widebodies, which are less efficient than its Boeing 777s.
The U.S. company’s fleet would be 389 aircraft in fiscal 2023, a drop of 28 planes compared to 2022. FedEx is expected to receive two more new Boeing 777Fs in the next 12 months and 14 Boeing 767-300Fs within a two-year period. years.
FedEx is going through a delicate moment after losing a contract with the US Postal Service in September last year, which was taken over by rival UPS.
The move stripped the company of its title as the largest cargo airline in the US and the end of a 20-year partnership with the country’s postal service.
