The first two A-29 Super Tucanos for the Uruguayan Air Force departed Embraer’s production site in Gaviao Peixoto, Brazil, on Tuesday, according to posts published by the service.

The turboprops are being ferried to Uruguay with support from an Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia that flew from Montevideo to Brazil on Sunday to assist with the transfer. The aircraft are expected to arrive in the country on Wednesday.

Uruguay ordered six A-29s in 2024. The initial contract covered a single aircraft, with five additional units added later following budget approvals.

The fleet will replace the Uruguayan Air Force’s aging Cessna A-37 Dragonfly jets, which have been used for airspace surveillance and advanced training missions. The new aircraft carry the serials FAU 250 and FAU 251 and will be operated by Air Squadron No. 2 at the 2nd Air Brigade in Durazno.

The delivery comes as Embraer records renewed demand for the Super Tucano after several years without major export orders. Recent customers include Paraguay, Panama, the Philippines, Portugal — the launch customer for the NATO-configured A-29N — and an undisclosed African nation.
