Dubai Airshowflydubai has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus to acquire up to 150 A321neo aircraft, with the agreement announced during the Dubai Airshow on November 18. This move ends the carrier’s exclusive reliance on Boeing and marks a significant shift in its fleet strategy.
Neither Airbus nor flydubai have cited delivery deadlines, as this depends on the signing of the contract. Despite the bad news for Boeing, the Dubai-based operator is expected to expand its 737 orders as well, according to reports.
At present, flydubai operates 96 Boeing 737 family aircraft, including 67 737 MAX 8s and three 737 MAX 9s. The carrier’s fleet has until now consisted solely of Boeing narrowbodies.
“We are pleased to announce a landmark agreement for 150 A321neo aircraft,” said His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and CEO of flydubai.
“We welcome flydubai as a new Airbus customer,” said Christian Scherer, CEO Commercial Aircraft at Airbus.
More than 7,200 A321neo aircraft have been ordered globally as of the end of October. The flydubai agreement is among the latest major commitments for the type.
