Following Poland, Slovakia also confirms sending MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine
Slovakia has followed Poland and will also send its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, Prime Minister Eduard Heger said on Friday.
The Eastern European country has eleven fighter jets, but they were withdrawn from service last year. Most of them would be unflyable, but they will still be sent to reinforce the Ukrainian Air Force's stockpile of parts.
The announcement comes a day after Polish President Andrzej Duda announced the deployment of the country's fleet of MiG-29 fighter jets. Four of those jets will be delivered to Ukraine "in the coming days", the Polish leader said.
The Polish Air Force has a larger fleet of MiG-29s, estimated at almost 30 planes, but is modernizing its inventory with Western aircraft.
In addition to the F-16s in operation, the country is waiting for the delivery of the Lockheed Martin F-35 and also the FA-50 light fighter, from South Korea's KAI.
Slovakia is awaiting the start of deliveries of an order for 14 Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70 signed in 2018.
The first jets will be delivered in 2024 and are already being assembled at the Greenville plant, the new fighter assembly line in the USA.
