A footage made by a pilot aboard a plane at Pearson Airport in Toronto has revealed how the Delta Air Lines CRJ-900 jet crashed on landing Monday afternoon.

The video follows the plane as it approaches the runway, when the landing gear appears to collapse. The right wing then hits the ground and catches fire, with the fuselage spinning clockwise until it comes to a stop upside down.

There were 80 people on board, including 76 passengers and four crew members. Of these, 18 had to be taken to a hospital with more serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The video also reveals that despite the snow, visibility was quite good and the wind speed did not appear to hinder the jet’s approach.

The touchdown, however, appears to have been heavy, but it is unclear whether this triggered the events or whether there was a mechanical problem with the aircraft.

The regional jet was operated by Endeavor Air, a subsidiary of Delta, and was on flight DL 4819 that had departed from Minneapolis/St Paul, in the USA.

Pearson Airport closed two of its runways, but reopened for operations hours later.
