DefenseThe French Ministry of the Armed Forces intends to expand its Rafale fighter fleet by 61 aircraft under the 2026 defense budget, bringing the total to 286 units, according to official budget documents and reports from La Tribune.
This planned procurement responds to increased operational demand and includes funding to replace two Rafales lost in an August 2024 accident. The order would raise the current fleet from 225 to 286 aircraft, exceeding previous targets.
The 2013 Defense White Paper set a previous ceiling of 225 Rafales, while the 2019-2025 Military Programming Law outlined a force structure of 185 for the Air and Space Force and 40 for the Navy.
The 2024-2030 Military Programming Law projects 178 Rafales in service by 2030, with a gradual increase to 225 by 2035. The new order suggests a potential revision of these targets to align with updated operational needs.
Dassault Aviation’s Rafale entered operational service with the French Air and Space Force in 1998 and the French Navy in 1999. The type performs air superiority, ground attack, reconnaissance, and nuclear deterrence missions.
This month, Dassault has completed assembly of the 300th Rafale fighter jet. The company faces a growing backlog of orders, with 533 aircraft contracted and 233 units yet to be delivered.
