Garuda Indonesia eyes Boeing 737 MAX, 787 Dreamliner jets, CEO says

Indonesia's state-owned carrier may close deal for 50 to 75 aircraft as it seeks to expand its operations

Garuda Indonesia is in talks with Boeing to buy 50 to 75 of the 737 MAX 8 and 787-9 Dreamliner models, its CEO Wamildan Tsani Panjaitan said on Thursday.

The chief executive is involved in tariff negotiations with the United States but he did not associate the deal with those discussions.

A state-owned carrier, Garuda has been involved in potential orders for both Western and Chinese aircraft from COMAC.

The airline’s fleet is diverse, ranging from Airbus A320s and A330s to Boeing 737s and 777s and including some ATR turboprops from its subsidiary Citilink.

Its newest jets are five A330-900s received through leasing between 2019 and 2025.

100 new routes by 2029

A new stage of the airline’s restructuring plan was approved at a general meeting held on June 30, which aims to expand its fleet of aircraft and expand its operations.

According to the plan, the goal is to add at least 100 new routes by 2029.
