General Atomics has quietly confirmed that it is operating two YFQ-42A autonomous fighter prototypes, as revealed by a new image released alongside a company statement about its participation in the International Fighter Conference in Rome.

The unveiling coincided with the 25th edition of the conference, which gathers over 450 air force commanders and defense leaders to discuss developments in combat aviation.

While the press release itself focused on the event, the accompanying photo — showing two YFQ-42A aircraft parked side by side at the company’s flight test facility in the United States — provides the first visual evidence that a second airframe is already complete and part of the test campaign.

The YFQ-42A is part of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program (General Atomics)

The YFQ-42A conducted its first flight in August 2025 and forms part of the U.S. Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program, which aims to develop autonomous systems capable of flying alongside manned fighters.

“The YFQ-42A is a revolutionary aircraft, and the fleet is in production and in the air today,” said David R. Alexander, president of GA-ASI, in the release.

The disclosure comes as competition intensifies within the CCA program. In parallel, Anduril’s YFQ-44A completed its maiden flight in late October, underscoring the pace of development among the industry’s lead contenders.

Since 1992, General Atomics has delivered more than 1,300 unmanned aircraft and surpassed nine million flight hours across its global fleet — experience now feeding directly into its next-generation autonomous combat systems.
