DefenseThe German budget committee has authorized the procurement of 20 additional Eurofighter Typhoon jets valued at €3.75 billion. Deliveries are scheduled between 2031 and 2034 as part of the tranche 5 production phase.
The new aircraft, equipped with advanced EScan radars, will replace older Tornado fighters and provide enhanced electronic warfare capabilities. This acquisition is expected to keep the Eurofighter operational in the German Air Force until at least 2060.
Alongside the aircraft purchase, the committee approved €412 million for spare parts and updated simulators to support the incoming fleet. A separate proposal includes a €1.13 billion investment through 2033 to upgrade the electronic warfare systems of the Eurofighter fleet.
These investments are drawn from the regular defense budget, not the €100 billion special fund established for the military, reflecting a long-term approach to fleet modernization.
In the same session, the committee approved a total of 14 major investment projects exceeding €25 million each, totaling over €7 billion. These include new Boxer armored vehicles, light ground combat vehicles, and medium-range vessels for maritime special forces.
Since the beginning of the year, 25 significant acquisition projects have been approved as Germany aims to bolster its conventional military strength within Europe. Further armament projects are expected to be submitted to the Bundestag by the Ministry of Defense throughout the year.
