DefenseGermany plans to procure 20 Airbus combat helicopters and missile systems, with the Bundestag set to approve more than €3 billion ($3.47 billion) in defense acquisitions during a closed session in Berlin, according to Bloomberg.
The upcoming approval is part of a broader effort to modernize the Bundeswehr, responding to security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The package includes contracts for additional missile systems and other equipment.
The contract for the 20 Airbus attack helicopters, the model of which has not been disclosed, is estimated at around €1 billion, forming a key component of the current procurement cycle. The list of agreements also features 100,000 night vision devices, also valued at approximately €1 billion.
The Ministry of Defense is seeking parliamentary approval to acquire additional IRIS-T SLM guided missiles, with a contract value of €1.2 billion. These acquisitions are designed to enhance Germany’s air defense and night-fighting capabilities.
In October, the Bundestag approved 18 defense contracts worth over €14 billion as part of the ongoing modernization drive. The parliament intends to authorize dozens of further large-scale procurements by the end of 2025.
Germany’s accelerated defense spending reflects a shift in procurement priorities since the onset of the Ukraine conflict.
