A bizarre incident occurred at Galeao Airport in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. The Boeing 737 MAX 8, registration PS-GPP, of Gol Linhas Aereas had begun its takeoff run when it hit a service vehicle that was in the middle of the runway.
The pilots aborted the takeoff in time and evacuated the aircraft, which suffered damage to the engine cowling and left wing.
There were no injuries to either the 737 or the vehicle, according to the airport administrator, Changi, which did not explain what caused the vehicle to enter the runway in the middle of a takeoff in progress.

According to a passenger, the aircraft was not full and shortly after takeoff a noise was heard and then the 737 activated the engine thrust reversers and began braking. The first impression was that there had been a failure or a tire burst.
In conversation with the airport tower, one of the pilots reported having hit a vehicle that was on the runway, which surprised the flight controller.

The crew then asked for vehicles to be sent to assist in the evacuation of the passengers and also to check the extent of the damage.
Gol’s 737 MAX would be on flight G31674 bound for Fortaleza and take off from the airport’s runway 10, which is 4,000 meters long, therefore with plenty of room for a safe abort.
The jet had been delivered by Boeing in March 2024 and is one of 53 aircraft of its type.
