Air TransportBahrain’s Gulf Air announced a $4.6 billion agreement with Boeing to acquire 12 more widebody 787 Dreamliners.
The Memorandum of Understanding also includes options for six more aircraft of the type and was signed during a visit by Bahrain’s Crown Prince, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, to the US, where he met with President Donald Trump.
“This agreement marks a transformative step in Gulf Air’s strategic growth journey as we expand our global footprint and modernize our fleet with one of the industry’s most advanced and efficient aircraft,” said Khalid Taqi, president of Gulf Air Group.
The 12 new Dreamliners will join the ten 787-9s currently in operation in the fleet and used on the national carrier’s long-haul routes.
Gulf Air has operated a wide range of aircraft, ranging from the Boeing 767 and 777 to the Airbus A330 and A340, as well as jets such as the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, BAC 1-11, Vickers VC-10, and Embraer E-Jets.
The current fleet consists of 43 aircraft, including 15 A320s and 18 A321s, as well as a dozen Dreamliners.
