The Hungarian Air Force took delivery of the first L-39 Skyfox advanced trainer jets on May 30.
Three aircraft manufactured by Aero Vodochody landed at Kecskemét Air Base after being escorted by two Saab Gripen fighters.
The Skyfox jets are part of an order for 12 aircraft signed in 2022. The agreement calls for eight aircraft for trainers and four configured for reconnaissance. The contract also includes the delivery of ground equipment, simulators and a training program.
“The Hungarian pilots have received new wings with the arrival of the first L-39 Skyfoxes. We are continuously developing the Hungarian air force as well, as the safeguarding of our airspace is of key importance. These L-39 Skyfox military training and light tactical aircraft strengthen not only the capabilities of the Hungarian air force but also at once the defence of Hungarian people,” said Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

Hungary had been without advanced training aircraft for several years and had to rely on agreements with foreign air forces to provide its pilots with training.
The Skyfox, also known as the L-39NG, is an upgrade of the Soviet-era jet trainer. It is powered by a Williams International FJ-44 engine, structural improvements, a glass cockpit and the ability to carry weapons and even an AESA radar in an external pod.
In addition to Hungary, the Czech Republic and Vietnam are customers of the L-39.
