Icelandair’s first Airbus A321 rolls out of Hamburg paint shop
Icelandair has unveiled its first Airbus aircraft after rolling out of the paint shop at its Hamburg plant on September 9. The jet is one of seven A321LRs the Icelandic carrier has leased, four of which will be delivered by 2025.
The first jet will be registered TF-IAA and will be delivered in November after receiving its engines, seats and entertainment system.
Icelandair is yet another airline that has traditionally operated only Boeing jets and has decided to fly Airbus aircraft.
In July 2023, the Reykjavik-based airline announced an agreement to acquire 13 A321XLRs from Airbus, including 12 more purchase options, which will replace its Boeing 757s.
However, the ultra-long-range jets will not begin to be delivered until 2029, so Icelandair has opted to lease aircraft in the short term to replace its older 757s.
Icelandair’s current fleet comprises 14 Boeing 757s (12 757-200s and two 757-300s), 21 737 MAXs (17 737-8s and four 737-9s) and six Dash 8 turboprops.
