The Indian government has approved the Netra MkII program, which involves converting six Airbus A321 aircraft into Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platforms. With an investment of approximately 20 billion INR (about US$ 227 million), the program aims to enhance India’s surveillance capabilities.

The Netra MkII initiative is part of a broader effort to upgrade India’s aerial surveillance infrastructure. The program complements the recent approval of three Netra Mk1A systems, based on the Embraer EMB-145 platform.

Officially sanctioned by the Government Security Council and the Acquisition Council in July 2025, the program highlights India’s focus on improving its defense capabilities.

The transformation process of the A321 aircraft will be carried out at Airbus Defence facilities, likely in Spain. Modifications will include structural reinforcements, the removal of passenger seats, and the installation of auxiliary power units (APU).

Advanced systems such as AESA radar, electronic warfare systems, and operator consoles will be integrated. The radar system will provide approximately 300 degrees of coverage, which, while enhanced, still aims to reach the 360-degree coverage target.

The A321’s configuration will facilitate the tracking of aerial and maritime threats, with real-time data management and sharing capabilities. Unlike the EMB 145, the A321 should offer great autonomy in addition to a more spacious cabin and paid cargo capacity.

Looking forward, the A321 platforms are anticipated to become operational between 2033 and 2034, following development trials slated for 2029.

The Netra MkII program is expected to significantly bolster India’s aerial surveillance reach, reinforcing its strategic position in AEW&C technology.
