IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has teamed up with Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM Group and Virgin Atlantic to seek a global partnership to codeshare flights.

The plan is aimed at the rapidly growing Indian aviation market, which is set to become one of the largest in the world in the near future.

The airlines did not give details or timelines for the partnership, but said they aim to grow on a “global scale”.

Although it is India’s largest carrier, IndiGo operates mostly domestic flights. The airline recently placed large orders for widebodies to launch international routes.

“IndiGo has embarked on an ambitious journey to become a global airline by 2030. This partnership represents another important milestone to pursue commercial synergies, operational excellence and innovation,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo.

Potential synergies

The airline has already partnered with Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic since 2022, while it will work with Delta for the first time.

IndiGo recently announced the launch of flights to Europe initially with leased Boeing 787s. The airline is awaiting the first of 30 A350-900s to launch more long-haul flights.

Delta, for its part, will resume flights from Atlanta, its main hub, to New Delhi, once it receives government approval.

The signed MoU also envisages a deeper collaboration that goes beyond selling each other tickets.

Potential synergies include commercial partnerships, frequent flyer programs, cargo flights and even maintenance, training and ground support services.
