DefenseThe Indonesian government signed a final agreement to acquire 48 KAAN stealth fighters, produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), on July 26 during a defense show in Turkey.
The contract follows a previous agreement revealed on June 11, which estimated an order for the 5th-generation aircraft, and also includes participation in the development of the Kaan.
There is no timeline or cost disclosed, but the fighters are expected to be delivered within 10 years.
The KAAN program is still in its early stages, with only one prototype in flight and a second aircraft to be unveiled in 2026 with significant modifications.
Despite the agreement, the Indonesian government’s ambiguous position raises questions about the future of the order.

The Indonesian Air Force is a partner in another fighter jet program, the KF-21 Boramae, from Korean Aerospace Industries, but has not invested the agreed-upon amounts.
The two countries say they have resolved the impasse, but it is unclear what will happen to the agreement, which has been threatened by suspicions of espionage by Indonesian officials.
In addition, Jakarta has expressed interest in acquiring more fighter jets, from the Dassault Rafale, for which it has a sealed order, to the Chengdu J-10CE, and the Boeing F-15EX.
