Leonardo announced on February 4, during the Singapore Airshow, the signing of a letter of intent with PT ESystem Solutions Indonesia and the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia covering the supply and in-country support of the M-346 F “Block 20” aircraft for the Indonesian Air Force.

The letter of intent follows Indonesia’s selection of the M-346 in July 2025 to address advanced training and light combat requirements. The aircraft is expected to support both pilot training and operational missions, including the replacement of ageing platforms such as the BAE Systems Hawk.

According to Leonardo, the agreement sets the framework for cooperation on aircraft supply as well as localized support activities. These include maintenance, overhaul, training and workforce development to be established in Indonesia. The parties said discussions will now continue toward a formal procurement contract, though no timeline or number of aircraft has been disclosed.

“The LOI follows the selection of the M-346 by the Ministry of Defence to respond to Indonesia’s training and combat capability needs,” Leonardo said in a statement released at the airshow.

The M-346 F Block 20 configuration combines an advanced jet trainer with light fighter capabilities. Leonardo said the standard includes a cockpit with a large-area display, an active electronically scanned array radar, Link 16 data-link, electronic countermeasures and compatibility with air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons, as well as the option for aerial refuelling.

The aircraft is also integrated into a training system that includes ground-based simulators and live, virtual and constructive training elements, intended to support pilot preparation for frontline combat aircraft while retaining operational flexibility.

Indonesia’s decision to proceed with the M-346 adds to a series of recent fighter and trainer selections as the country reshapes its air force structure, balancing training needs with light combat and transition roles.
