ITA Airways debuted its new long-haul service between Rome and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on October 29. The daily frequency is operated with Airbus A330-200 and A330-900neo aircraft.

The Italian carrier reestablished the route that existed at the time of Alitalia, its predecessor, which suspended flights amid the pandemic.

Currently, ITA Airways flies from Rome to São Paulo and Buenos Aires in South America.

The flight to Rio (Galeão) departs the Italian capital at 9:50 pm and arrives in Brazil at 6:05 am the following day. Return takes place at 3:45 pm with landing in Rome at 6:45 am the following day (local time).

Representatives from ITA Airways, RioGaleão and the local government celebrate the flight’s debut (RioGaleao)

“Today is a very important day for us. We are reconnecting Rio de Janeiro with Rome, cities known worldwide for their natural beauty and history. With this new daily route, we bring more tourists, more jobs and new businesses to the city of Rio” , said Alexandre Monteiro, President of RIOgaleão, the concessionaire that manages Tom Jobim international airport.

The route is expected to carry almost 50,000 passengers between November and February 2024, high season in the southern hemisphere.
