Japan to Deploy F-15J Fighters to UK for Joint Training

Japan will send its F-15J fighter jets to the United Kingdom for the first time, as confirmed by UK Defence Secretary John Healey on August 29. The deployment aims to deepen security cooperation between the two countries and involves aircraft from the 201st and 203rd Fighter Squadrons of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.

The F-15J fighters are based at Chitose Air Base, located in Hokkaidō, northern Japan. Their arrival in the UK is expected within the next few weeks. Once in the UK, these aircraft will conduct joint training exercises with the Royal Air Force, including combined missions and tactical exchanges.

The F-15J is operated by Japan since the 1980s and has undergone several modernization programs. Its participation in this deployment underscores the platform’s continued relevance in international training scenarios.

This deployment is part of a broader effort by Japan and the UK to strengthen defense ties, a trend that has accelerated following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In recent years, both countries have expanded collaboration in defense technology and operations, including the joint development of a next-generation fighter with Italy under the GCAP program.
