JetBlue concluded the retirement of its Embraer E190 fleet on September 9, with the last commercial flight operating between New York (JFK) and Boston. The milestone event brought together customers, crew members and guests, highlighting the E190’s significance in the airline’s operations since 2005.

Chief Operating Officer Warren Christie, who piloted JetBlue’s inaugural E190 service two decades ago, also commanded the final flight. The E190, configured with 100 passenger seats, enabled JetBlue to expand into short-haul markets and introduced the type into global airline service for the first time.

“I am proud to operate today’s flight, as it marks a significant evolution of our fleet,” said Christie. “The E190 was instrumental in our early years and proved to deliver on critical connectivity in short-haul markets, allowing us to grow into new regions, especially in our New York and Boston focus cities. As one of the originating crewmembers to launch the E190 at JetBlue, it is an honor to pilot our final E190 revenue flight.”

The retirement aligns with JetBlue’s ongoing fleet modernization strategy, coinciding with the delivery of its 50th Airbus A220. The carrier has now received 52 out of 100 ordered A220 aircraft, which are progressively replacing the outgoing E190s.

With this transition, JetBlue’s fleet now consists exclusively of Airbus A320 and A220 family aircraft. The A220 offers cost savings and operational efficiencies, with a 140-seat cabin equipped with Collins Meridian seats and additional amenities.

The aircraft’s range also enables JetBlue to serve transcontinental routes previously not accessible with the E190.

The fleet renewal supports JetBlue’s financial targets and its JetForward strategy. The airline expects improved route flexibility and a standardized narrowbody fleet to influence its competitive positioning and customer experience in the coming years.
