Nine months after announcing a pre-agreement to acquire up to 50 widebodies, Boeing and Korean Air have finally signed a contract for 20 777-9 jets, 20 787-10s and 10 Dreamliner options.
According to Boeing, this is the largest deal ever for the South Korean carrier, which has just changed its corporate identity and is in the midst of integrating with former rival Asiana Airlines.
The two companies had announced a purchase commitment during the 2024 Farnborough Airshow, held in July, but the finalization of the agreement took a long time.
“For over 50 years, Korean Air and Boeing have built a relationship based on trust and mutual growth. Today, we further strengthen our historic relationship with this landmark order,” said Walter Cho, chairman and CEO of Korean Air and Hanjin Group. “We look forward to continuing our journey with Boeing as our trusted partner in innovation and excellence.”
“This record order is the culmination of our more than 50-year partnership with Korean Air and demonstrates the strength of Boeing’s market-leading widebody family,” added Dan Schull, Boeing vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Northeast Asia. “The combination of economic efficiency and range of the 777X and 787 Dreamliner will position Korean Air for continued growth and long-term success.”
Korean Air also has an order for 33 A350 jets with Airbus, 27 of them of the A350-1000 variant, which is high capacity and competes with the Boeing 777X.
